Limb amputations are carried out for a variety of reasons, sometimes as an urgent procedure, and other times after careful planning when it is considered the best option to restore function and alleviate pain following severe injury, infection, or complex limb deformity.
Our aim is not simply to remove a limb, but to create a comfortable, functional residual limb that allows the best possible rehabilitation and quality of life.
At Leeds Limb Clinic, we focus on precise soft tissue and bone preparation, proactive nerve management and meticulous wound closure to help reduce pain and improve prosthetic fitting. All amputations are planned by our orthoplastic multidisciplinary team, and in the majority of cases include cutting edge nerve surgery techniques like targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) or regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNI) to minimise the chances of post-amputation pain syndromes. We work closely with specialists in rehabilitation and prosthetic, and pain management to support patients throughout recovery and rehabilitation.
