For Healthcare Professionals

Working Together to Deliver Specialist Limb Care

The Leeds Limb Centre is a specialist multidisciplinary practice providing assessment and treatment for complex disorders of the upper and lower limb.

We work collaboratively with healthcare professionals across primary care, secondary care and independent practice, providing timely specialist opinion, advanced reconstructive surgery and coordinated multidisciplinary rehabilitation.

Our aim is simple: to complement—not replace—the excellent care already being provided by our referring colleagues.

Who Can Refer?

We welcome referrals from:

  • General Practitioners
  • Consultant Surgeons
  • Rehabilitation Medicine Physicians
  • Pain Medicine Specialists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Prosthetists and Orthotists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Community Rehabilitation Teams
  • Case Managers
  • Solicitors acting in personal injury or clinical negligence cases
  • Private Medical Insurers

Patients may be referred for consultation, multidisciplinary assessment, second opinion or specialist surgical treatment.

Multidisciplinary Assessment

Many patients benefit from assessment by more
than one specialist.

Where appropriate, patients may be reviewed jointly by members of our multidisciplinary team, allowing coordinated decision-making and a single integrated management plan.

Depending on the clinical problem, this may include:

  • Plastic and reconstructive surgeons
  • Orthopaedic surgeons
  • Prosthetists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Pain specialists
  • Rehabilitation physicians

This approach is particularly valuable for patients with complex amputation problems, difficult limb reconstruction and persistent functional impairment.

Limb Reconstruction

  • Chronic infection
  • Functional deficits after trauma

We are equally happy to provide a second opinion where management is uncertain or where highly specialised reconstructive options are being considered.

Working With Rehabilitation Teams

Successful reconstruction depends upon high-quality rehabilitation.

We actively encourage referral from prosthetists, physiotherapists and rehabilitation clinicians, and are committed to maintaining close communication throughout treatment.

Patients already under the care of local rehabilitation services will continue to work with their established team wherever possible.

For patients without existing rehabilitation support, we can coordinate care with our preferred rehabilitation partners.

Communication

We understand the importance of timely clinical communication.

Following assessment, referring clinicians will receive:

  • A detailed clinic letter
  • Investigation results where appropriate
  • Our diagnosis
  • Recommended treatment plan
  • Details of any planned surgery
  • Ongoing follow-up arrangements

We believe collaborative care leads to better outcomes and welcome discussion regarding complex cases before or after referral.
